Even though the beautiful horn-like jaws of the males look so powerful and majestic, stag beetles are sadly extinct in some regions and are declining across many others. They spend most of their life (up to SIX YEARS!!!) underground as larvae feeding on rotting wood. Their adult lives pass by in a comparative blink of an eye - just a few months. A few months of enjoyment though I hope, as they feed on fruit juice, tree sap and water before expiring.
